However, instead of a water channel, the vision was for a rail connection through the Alps. Construction took place between 1901 and 1909, sections such as the Tauern tunnel were double tracked, with other sections of the pass only being single.The line still remains in use to this day, served by a series of passenger trains, including a motorail service, as well as freight.
